Namibian Gravel Road Report

15 November 2017 - Johan Kriek
I have travelled extensively through Namibia during June, August and October 2017. Herewith a short summary of the diferent gravel roads as experienced by me. I have come across graders during October, but I think it is a queston of too litle too late.

Opuwo - Epupa (C43)
Heavily corrugated - drop tyre pressure at least 50% and stick to 60 km/h, take care towards Epupa, as there are a couple of sharp bends that can catch you out!

Opuwo - Sesfontein (C43)
Heavily corrugated in places - drop tyre pressure 30 - 40%, Watch out for oncoming traffic cuting corners!

Sesfontein - Hoanib riverbed
Serious powder dust until you reach the check point and enter the river. I tried various "in" and "out" roads but they all seem to be the same - good luck! Remember to clean your air filter after that excursion.

Sesfontein - Palmwag (C43)
This portion of the road is not too baad, but heavily corrugated the last 20 km towards Palmwag. Take care when you clear the blind rises, as oncoming traffic sometimes does not keep left!

Palmwag - Twyfelfontein (C43 & C39 & D2612)
Remember you are not allowed to take uncooked/fresh meat from direction Palmwag through the Veterinary disease control point to the south.
C43 - Heavily corrugated - Drop tyre pressure at least 50% and stick to 60 - 70 km/h, C39 - Same as above, D2612. Good luck!

Twyfelfontein to Uis (C39 & C35)
Do not take the short cut on the D2612 to the C35 - Road from hell! Drive via Khorixas. C39 - Acceptable - watch out for oncoming trafc. C35 - Acceptable - wide gravel road which will be a pleasure once graded.

Uis - Hentesbaai (C35)
Original great Namibian gravel road.

Walvisbaai - Solitaire (C14)
Graded in places, but expect heavy corrugations in places, especially around the Kuiseb canyon area. Watch out for oncoming traffic not keep-ing left! Solitaire: Be prepared to wait in a long queue for your apple pie - overlander trucks, buses and self drive tourists are changing the "look and feel" of Solitaire.

Solitaire - Sesriem (C19)
Badly corrugated in places. Again drop those tyre pressures, and enjoy the vistas of the Namib.

Sesriem - Helmeringhausen via Namib Rand (C27)
Currently a road from hell! Avoid if you can! I would recommend using the C19 to Maltehohe, and from there the C14 to Helmeringhausen - beautiful original smooth gravel roads. By the way, I think that Helmeringhausen's hotel now serve the best apple pie in Namibia, AND without the crowds!

Helmeringhausen - Aus (C13)
Not too bad. Drop tyre pressures around 30 - 40 %.
