As the early morning embraced us with a cool mist, we couldn't help but wonder if the mountain summits would remain shrouded in fog. However, our passion for exploration and camaraderie kept our spirits high, knowing that the mysteries of the trail would soon be revealed.
Meticulous planning and preparation paved the way for this unforgettable event. We owe a debt of gratitude to the team from BearQuip, whose unwavering support ensured our journey was both accessible and exhilarating. They not only secured and cleared the trail but also surprised us with refreshing bottled water and stickers to mark the occasion.
Adding to the excitement, MO'BA Coffee joined our convoy, their Defender 90 equipped with everything needed to brew delightful drinks on the trail. Despite a smaller headcount than their usual, the uniqueness of the event captured the attention of Reo, who moved mountains to make sure that the MO'BA Coffee Defender was on the trail with us.
As the sun rose higher, the Sasol garage became a hive of activity, abuzz with enthusiastic Land Rover owners and newcomers eager to join the Landys and Lattes experience. This open event embraced the spirit of inclusivity, welcoming both members and non-members, forging new connections and friendships.
Following a brief drivers' briefing, our convoy set forth with eagerness and excitement, ready to take on the trail's challenges. The mist had gracefully lifted, revealing the splendor of the landscape that awaited us.
Our journey commenced as we entered the gated area, receiving our BearQuip bottled water from Jaco, a thoughtful gesture to ensure our well-being throughout the morning’s activity. The trail is initially quite manageable terrain, which gently guided us towards a breathtaking halfway point where breakfast and drinks awaited.
The midway spot was truly magnificent, boasting an awe-inspiring view overlooking Britz. Here, a mouthwatering mountain breakfast was dished out to the hungry. As an enthusiast with an inclination for variety and a little appreciation for complexity, I had insisted on not just one type of pancake but three delightful options: sugar and cinnamon, mince, and a ham, tomato, corn, and cheese, all to be savored on the side of the mountain. I thought it would be a fantastic idea to offer this degree of complexity so far away from the comforts of a kitchen.
I am truly grateful that Michelle knew what to do to make my ambitious culinary desire a reality out there. Her culinary prowess was truly impressive. She embraced the challenge wholeheartedly, making sure that everyone would be treated to a delectable feast amidst the scenic beauty of the mountain. With my culinary shortcomings quickly became apparent, I found myself in need of some much-needed assistance. Teagen, always willing to lend a hand, stepped in to support the pancake-making endeavor, followed shortly afterwards by Stephen's wife Erika, and just in time too… because it wasn’t long after that when Eldene Mason decided that the pancake of the day was to be called the full house! This mouthwatering delight was the combination of all the savoury toppings in 1 pancake. It was delicious, and it fast became the preferred order as more hungry people queued for the new flavour.
My knowledge of hosting may be lacking, but the one thing I do know is that you don’t leave it up to your Afrikaans girlfriend to deliver on your overzealous culinary requirements, and so I stood fast amongst these fine people trying to add a helping hand where I could. I think the most appreciative of those around were Griffin and Katie, my four-legged fur-kids who happily hung around Dad’s feet waiting for me to make a small mess which they happily gorged on.
Although it had been my intention that the pancakes would be for each person's account, it quickly became evident that trying to manage taking orders, preparing pancakes, and sorting out payment was not going to work. Therefore, we made the decision to simply provide the pancakes for everyone to enjoy. I am deeply grateful to all those who decided to make a donation for the food. Your generosity is truly appreciated, and while I was busy overseeing the pancake extravaganza, I regret not being able to personally note each donor. Please know that my thanks are sincere and heartfelt to all who contributed.
It was also go time for MO'BA Coffee's Reo, who swiftly set up the solar panels and got his rig ready for the delightful beverage service. Coffee Freezos, Tea, and Hot Chocolate, were soon being savored, adding to the enjoyment of the breathtaking scenery and scrumptious food. The aroma of freshly brewed beverages mingled with the crisp mountain air, creating a sense of warmth and comfort amidst the enchanting surroundings. Participants were able to savor the moment and indulge in the magical atmosphere.
To add to the enchantment, the BearQuip team thoughtfully arranged a small fire, providing warmth and comfort as we soaked in the beauty of our shared passion for Land Rovers. It was a moment where time seemed to stand still, where conversations flowed effortlessly, and laughter echoed through the mountains. The experience of Landys and Lattes - July 2022 was not only a celebration of Land Rover ownership but also a testament to the sense of community that binds us together. Our love for Landys transcends mere vehicles; it forges deep connections among like-minded adventurers.
As the morning progressed and tummies satisfied with good food and drinks, our convoy prepared to continue our journey to the summit, where even more spectacular views awaited. This trail was Reo’s first attempt at driving offroad and although he had enjoyed his time to this point, he opted to rather turn around and return the way we had come. For the rest, the trail became a bit more challenging, but nothing a Landy couldn't handle. Along the way, we encountered a steep, loose gravel section that snaked through the veld, offering a thrilling axel-twister moment.
The capability of our vehicles and the people behind the steering wheel was evident as all seemed to effortlessly navigate the trail, even though we had a Landy in our midst that had experienced a bit of trouble on the previous section. Unfortunately, towards the midway point, the rear right spring had unseated and became wedged against the wheel, causing a unique challenge for Rick Mason's vehicle. This issue would later be attended to by Simon, Rick, and Kevin, who decided to investigate and fix the issue after the trail, ensuring that the Land Rover was back in top shape for future adventures.
Upon reaching the summit, a breathtaking panoramic view unfolded before our eyes, stretching from Britz all the way to the dam and beyond. It was a moment of sheer wonder and appreciation for the beauty of the natural landscape. As Land Rover enthusiasts, we are privileged to have such incredible opportunities that allow us to forge unforgettable memories, and this day was undoubtedly one of those cherished moments. The camaraderie among Landy Lovers was heartwarming, as new friendships formed effortlessly through shared stories and experiences. The mountaintop buzzed with activity, with laughter, with conversation, and with countless photographs capturing the joyous spirit of the day.
While I thought some might opt to turn back, the allure of adventure proved too irresistible for our enthusiastic Landy lovers. Brimming with excitement, everyone embraced the challenge of the steep descent that led us into the picturesque mountain valley, guiding us toward the mesmerizing Hartbeespoort Dam. Low Range first became the gear of choice for navigating some of the steeper sections, but the trail remained enjoyable, offering an exhilarating drive, albeit through some overgrown and tight spots. The thrill of the journey was evident on every face, and the sense of accomplishment filled the air as we successfully completed this remarkable trail together.
As we regrouped at the bottom, our faces beamed with happiness, our hearts filled with cherished memories. The success of Landys and Lattes - July 2022 was a testament to the power of camaraderie and the joy of exploration. We extend our sincere thanks to Stephen, Jaco, and the team from BearQuip and Reo from MO'BA Coffee for their tremendous support, which made this event possible.
With each Land Rover adventure, my love for these iconic vehicles deepens, and the bonds we form grow stronger. As I look toward future expeditions, I eagerly await the next chapter in the Land Rover journey. Until then, let's cherish the memories of Landys and Lattes - July 2022, where we celebrated life, friendship, and the indomitable spirit of Land Rover ownership. Together, we continue to embrace the thrill of exploration, where uncharted terrain becomes the backdrop for lifelong memories.
